![]() On the obverse, the timeless portrait of Queen Elizabeth II is present, as designed by Jody Clark. Graphic designer Aaron West was responsible for the reverse he placed the sun at the centre of the coin with several ovals around it, representing the orbit ellipses of the star’s planets. This inspiration was taken from the 1687 Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica (Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy), which is the foundation of classical mechanics and one of the most important publications in the history of science. The story of Sir Isaac finding inspiration for his theory of gravitation after observing an apple fall beside him is a tale nearly everyone is aware of, however this Royal Mint coin depicts concepts from Sir Isaac’s Proposition 11 on the reverse. This commemorative UK coin is struck to a high-quality Brilliant Uncirculated finish and is issued inside a colourful slipcase, full of information on the life of the great physicist. To celebrate the 375th anniversary of the birth of Sir Isaac Newton, The Royal Mint issued a limited edition 50 Pence coin.
